Seek's new pricing for job ads

Seek has been around since 1998 and they state they are the most-visited employment site in Australia. They are definitely a leading player in Australia’s online job boards.

Until recently, Seek charged a flat rate per job ad, ranging from $275 for a standard ad to $695 for a premium ad, plus GST. However, changes to the pricing model and contracts, now mean the cost to advertise a job on Seek now varies depending on a number of factors including*:

  • Job classification
  • Supply of candidates
  • Demand of candidates
  • Location of Job
  • Average salary of a role
  • And more, however the factors in the ‘more’ are not specified in any of the publicly available information we found.

Employers can pay at the time they post a job, or pre pay to gain a discount.

Seek’s pre payment options appear to offer discounts between 5% - 12%. The more you pre pay the higher the percentage discount. All pre payment budgets must be used within 12 and there are no refunds on any unused amount of your pre payment.

There are 2 pre-payment packages: ‘Flexible Ad Budget’ and ‘Branded Ad Budget’.

Purchasing the ‘Flexible Ad Budget’ on Seek:

  • Allow you to post Classic, StandOut or Premium ads
  • Your ad is shown on Seek for 30 days
  • Seek’s variable price model is used to calculate how much of your pre paid budget is used per job ad
  • The ‘12 months of discount’ only applies to CLASSIC ads posted using this pre payment.
  • If you use all of your pre paid budget, you can purchase additional job ads at the discounted rate for 12 months

The $850 Flexible Ad Budget would get an average of 3 CLASSIC ads on Seek’s variable price model and equates to a $45 discount.

On our calculations, that means:

  • $850 pre payment =  $895 of Flexible Ad Budget on Seek
    • The Seek website states that you save $45 with this pre payment. This is about a 5% discount
  • Therefore the price of 1 CLASSIC job ad will be $298.33 on average.
    • $895 / 3 jobs = $298.33 per job ad
  • When the 5% discount is applied, the average cost of a CLASSIC job ad is $283.10

However, as the price to post a job ad is variable, there is no guarantee that you will be able to post 3 classic job ads on Seek.

To gain a discount on StandOut or Premium ads on Seek, you need to buy a ‘Branded Ad Budget’.

Purchasing the ‘Branded Ad Budget’ on Seek:

  • Allows you to post StandOut or Premium ads
  • Your ad is shown on Seek for 30 days
  • Seek’s variable price model is used to calculate how much of your pre paid budget is used per job ad
  • The ‘12 months of discount’ is applied to StandOut jobs posted using this pre payment budget
  • Once you’ve used all of your initial pre paid Branded Ad Budget, you can continue to purchase ads at your discounted rate for a12 months.

The $1050 Branded Ad Budget would get on average 3 StandOut ads on Seek’s variable price model and equates to a $59 discount.

On our calculations, that means

  • $1050 pre payment =  $1109 of Flexible Ad Budget on Seek
    • Their website states that you save $59 with this pre payment. This is about a 5% discount.
  • Therefore the price of 1 StandOut ad is $369.67 on average
    • $1109 / 3 jobs = $369.67 per job ad
  • When the 5% discount is applied, the average cost of a CLASSIC job ad is $350

How to get accurate pricing for a job ad on Seek

What we found is that to get the current Seek pricing you need to:

  • Create a Seek employer profile or login using your existing details
  • Enter your job ad specifics
  • You will be shown the cost of your job ad

This does mean it’s difficult to accurately budget the cost of advertising a job on Seek as the price may be different each time a job is posted - even if it’s the same job, in the same city.

Seek states that the contract and pricing changes are “to provide a more efficient and equitable marketplace.” You can check out the full statement on variable pricing and discounts on Seek’s website.
